Casa Colibri (Hummingbird House) is one of eleven luxurious vacation villas located in the exclusive gated community of Punta el Custodio, only 70 miles north of the Puerto Vallarta airport. Punta el Custodio, a rocky promontory covered with lush tropical vegetation, juts into the Pacific Ocean. To the south lies an almost deserted 12 mile long beach, just steps away, safe for even small children, yet offering some of the best surfing on the Mexican coast. A series of spectacular cliffs lies to the north . The cobalt sky is filled with squadrons of pelicans and soaring frigate birds. Whales play just a few hundred yards off the Point and dolphins cavort right near the shore. The tidal estuary along the south edge of the Point leads to a mangrove swamp that is a virtual Serengeti of shorebirds. Casa Colibri is a palapa village of four connected units, built entirely by hand by a local master mason and his three sons. Casa Colibri boasts an immense, vaulted main palapa open on three sides, a completely modern kitchen, a pool built into the living rock and air conditioned bedrooms (two of them palapas), each with its own luxurious private bathroom done in gorgeous traditional Talavera tile work. Step out of your palapa bedroom onto a terrace in the treetops overlooking the sea, where you can have your breakfast , soak in the sun, or have your drinks served up from the terrace wet bar. If you are looking for a secluded vacation hideaway just 100 yards from one of the planet's finest sand beaches, then Casa Coilibri is for you! Casa Colibri comes with a maid and cook; the meal plan (required) offers two opulent meals a day (breakfast and comida, the main afternoon meal), fruit, snacks, all the beer and soft drinks you want. Have what's on the menu or come back with a red snapper or two and have the cook prepare them for you. On Sundays, when the cook is off, the food package provides a traditional fish and seafood comida at one of the beachside restaurants at the base of the Point, in the tiny fishing hamlet of Platanitos (population: 57). Visit the picturesque local farming town of Zacualpan (where you have to dodge tractors and combines lumbering down the main drag), meander through its local street market, go whale watching, bird watching, deep sea fishing (easily arranged through our manager), surf, release newly-hatched sea turtles, go kayaking, visit the nearby ancient Huichol Indian petroglyphs, the spectacular local waterfalls, a crocodile farm... Or just kick back, lie in the sun and catch up on all that reading you were going to do. Leave Puerto Vallarta behind with its high-rise hotels, jam-packed beaches, giant tour boats, overpriced and overcrowded restaurants, noisy traffic and smog. Head north to Punta el Custodio for the experience of a lifetime! And if you do come, you almost certainly will come again... and again. Punta el Custodio is addicting! Casa Colibri sleeps six (two bedrooms each have a king size bed and the third bedroom has two twin beds. Rates start at $2,250 USD/week for low season. High season rates are $3,500 USD/week December 17-January 7 and $3,500 USD/week March 11-April 22. The required meal plan is $175/USD week per person.
